2021 - ABSi Ranked #81 by LBM Journal - TOP 100 in USA

LBM Journal Top 100 2020 2021

ABSi ranked in LBM's TOP 100 of Lumberyards and Pro Dealers. This is quite an accomplishent considering ABSi is a window and door dealer only and does not supply general building materials. In a year unlike any other, the power of people, the strength of relationships, and the resilience to serve customers no matter the circumstances defined our industry.

While a typical year starts on January 1, for many in the LBM industry the “past year” may feel more like March 2020 through March 2021. When the pandemic reached U.S. shores in full force last year, the first two months faded into the background and the rest of 2020 became a year unlike anything ever experienced in building materials sales and distribution. As a result, the inaugural LBM JOURNAL 100—a ranking of the nation’s top pro dealers and lumberyards by 2020 sales—reflects much more than a typical calendar year of doing business. It hbs delaer top 300 2020seems like a long time ago in a business galaxy far, far away when the biggest concern for industry operations was a toss-up between tariffs, consolidation and the labor shortage.

Those considerations — and not the pandemic of 2020 — colored this year’s Top 300 list of hardware and building supply dealers. HBS Dealer editors used a combination of e-mail surveys, internet research, published reports and estimates to determine the data points on the following pages. Those metrics include: Revenue for the most recently completed fiscal year, The number of stores/locations. Once again, it’s a top heavy list. The world’s largest home improvement retailer maintained its grip on the top spot with a record $110 billion in sales. And The Home Depot doesn’t intend to let go anytime soon. Read Full Article

2020- ABSi Recognized “Westcoast Dealers Lean on Financial Strength to Gain Markets”

Publication date: Feb 27, 2020  DWM Magazine

According to year-end housing data, on a regional and year-to-date basis, combined single-family and multifamily housing starts were lower in the Midwest and West regions. While the West was hit the hardest, at -4.7%, data collected by [DWM] shows that some door and window dealers have landed strategies that more than make up for those losses. Top dealers in California, for instance, saw anywhere from $1 to $3 million increases in revenues for 2019—averaging an 8% increase. “Much of our growth in 2019 was attributed to a maturing salesforce choosing to sell more ultra-high-end products, complimented by some unique corporate strategies,” says Scott Thurber, president of Associated Building Supply Inc. (ABSI) in Auburn, Calif.

That strategy led to $3 million worth of growth—a figure that Thurber says his company plans to stretch even further this year, aiming for $50 million in revenue. It’s also a strategy that he says doesn’t come easy.“Selling ultra-high-end products is not for every company,” he says. “Due to the extensive sales cycle and lead times, selling high-end window and door products requires ample cash-flow and reserves.” As a result, many competitors rely heavily on products that present shorter lead times for the sake of snappier payment and cash flow, he says. Those same commodity-oriented products are less complicated also easier to sell with a shorter sales cycle, he suggests. By adapting to higher skill sets, ABSI’s veteran sales consultants have learned to work through what he says are the more technical issues accompanying high-end luxury home projects. Challenges include, “an onslaught of business tasks and working with a multitude of decision influencers and personalities; exchange rates; international shipping and logistics; and metric to imperial conversions,” he says, as well as installation challenges, product application, on-site project management and proactive architectural specification assistance.

Publication date: Mar 27, 2020  DWM Magazine

On that note, ABSi exclusively supplies luxury windows and doors of leading Domestic and European vetted brands. The data for DWM’s annual list shows that—among the best of the best, at least—in 2019, the vast majority (70%) continued onward and upward by increasing revenues.

DWM end of year housing data on a regional and year-to-date basis reflects combined single-family and multifamily housing starts at the close of 2019 were higher in the Northeast (+3.0%) and South (+8.6%), but down in the Midwest (-0.8%) and West (-4.7%). Despite housing starts in the West being down 4.7% ABSi continues its growth and expansion.

Publication date Jun 1, 2020  ProSales Magazine. ABSi makes the coveted PROSALES 100! It is an enormous honor to be listed amongst the largest multi-location lumberyard chains in the Nation when ABSI is a specialty supplier of Luxury Windows & Doors only, not a full line Building Materials supplier. ABSi Ranks #93 in the Nation amongst all National LBM companies and ranks #7 in the Nation by sales per employee. Pros Sales 100 by employee revenue

Collectively, the dealers on the 2020 ProSales 100 list grew their revenue for the 10th consecutive year, reaching $62.9 billion last year, besting 2018’s total by $1.48 billion. It’s an impressive feat, especially considering industry headwinds such as weather challenges, the trade war with China, commodity price deflation, and the ongoing industrywide labor shortage. Despite all of this, housing starts picked up in the second half of the year, soaring from a low of about 1.15 million in February to cap the year at about 1.6 million starts in December and enabling the ProSales 100 dealers to collectively inch their way toward growth. Specialty dealers, once again, had an impressive year. There are only 15 of them on the PS100 list, which represents a 50% increase from last year, but they have a sizable presence, accounting for 46% of the revenue generated by the entire list.  ProSales Magazine -Read full article

2019 - ABSi Recognized - "Luxury Windows & Doors for Luxury Home" by Construction Focus Magazine

Construction in Focus Magazine LOGO

Associated Building Supply, Inc. supplies high-end window and door systems to California’s luxury-home market. It’s rated one of the best by its own industry, and driven to be one of the best by its own beliefs. The company was established in Oxnard, California in 1993 by founder Chris Cole. With Chris at the helm ABSi grew over the next decade into a 3.8 million-JW Round Interiordollar company, well established in two locationsand with a solid foundation in southern California. In 2006 Scott Thurber joined the organization and helped Cole grow it into a leading supplier in the region. Today the company employs 30 people and operates nine showrooms and two corporate offices spanning the entire state. As California’s leading supplier of high-end window and door systems, ABSi has seen consistent success and last year achieved 35 million dollars in sales. The history of ABSi has been 26 years of learning, and focusingon, what matters most to its customers and its vendor partners. “Part of what we do really well is representing our brands,” says Vice President Scott Thurber. “Our vendors provide a superhigh level of service to us because of our ability to sell their products. When we bring on a brand to sell we’re very selective and we work very closely with the vendor to develop a joint plan to build both their brand and our brand together.” Over the course of its existence ABSi has carefully cultivated a premium vendor network and a streamlined product offering. As the company grew, so did its vendor network.

L.A.Times2Overall, the company’s performance rates at the top for nearly every brand it works with. “It really increases the level of service we can offer to our customers because of the solid relationships we have with our vendors,” says Thurber. “We’re different that way.” ABSi aims to be much more than a typical supplier. Going far beyond just the product, the company provides a complete solution to every job by working closely with the builders, architects, and homeowners to develop a clear understanding of all their needs, providing a unique solution for the project at hand. This means that ABSi gets involved early on so that its sales consultants can workNewPortBeach3 with the architects, helping them specify products that are right for the design. This involves not only aesthetic decisions, but application- and performance-based decisions as well. As a result of this, ABSi helps ensure that all the products specified in the architect’s plans are structurally feasible, and that they are suited to the weather and exposure requirements of the house. Once the designs are completed, ABSi will work with the building team as well, ensuring that everything fits within budget and code requirements, and that the products are properly installed.

Associated Building Supply Inc. Ranks No. 4264 in the 2018 Inc. 5000 with a Three-Year Sales Growth of 80%.

NEW YORK, August 15, 2018Inc. magazine today revealed that ASSOCIATED BUILDING SUPPLY INC. is NO. 4246 on its 37th annual Inc. 5000, the most prestigious ranking of the nation's fastest-growing private companies. The list represents a unique look at the most successful companies within the American economy’s most dynamic segment— its independent small and midsized businesses. Companies such as Microsoft, Dell, Domino’s Pizza, Pandora, Timberland, LinkedIn, Yelp, Zillow, and many other well-known names gained their first national exposure as honorees of the Inc. 5000.

“We are extremely honored to be recognized as one of Inc. 5000’s fastest-growing private companies in the Nation. Inc5000 colorstackedFor over 25 years our consistent growth is directly linked to the high-level contributions of our exceptional employees and management team. Our loyal customer base stems from our all-hands-on-deck committment to customer satisfaction, says ABSi Christopher Cole President and Owner.”

Not only have the companies on the 2018 Inc. 5000 been very competitive within their markets, but the list as a whole shows staggering growth compared with prior lists. The 2018 Inc. 5000 achieved an astounding three-year average growth of 538.2 percent, and a median rate of 171.8 percent. The Inc. 5000’s aggregate revenue was $206.1 billion in 2017, accounting for 664,095 jobs over the past three years. Complete results of the Inc. 5000, including company profiles and an interactive database that can be sorted by industry, region, and other criteria, can be found at www.inc.com/inc5000.

Started in 1982, this prestigious list has become the hallmark of entrepreneurial success. “If your company is on the Inc. 5000, it’s unparalleled recognition of your years of hard work and sacrifice,” says Inc. editor in chief James Ledbetter. “The lines of business may come and go, or come and stay. What doesn’t change is the way entrepreneurs create and accelerate the forces that shape our lives. The Inc. 5000 is the most persuasive evidence I know that the American Dream is still alive!”

Methodology: The 2018 Inc. 5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth when comparing 2014 and 2018. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2014. They had to be U.S.-based, privately held, for profit, and independent—not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies—as of December 31, 2017. (Since then, a number of companies on the list have gone public or been acquired.) The minimum revenue required for 2014 is $100,000; the minimum for 2017 is $2 million. As always, Inc. reserves the right to decline applicants for subjective reasons.

With the ability to swing inward or out, the massive glass panels on the Pivot Door maximizes views and lets in light. Customized hardware allows you to open and close the door with ease.

EurolinePivot1EurolinePivot5Pictured to the left and right are Steel Pivot Doors manufactured by one of our core vendors, Euroline Steel Windows & Doors. With the heights reaching up to 12 feet and openings up to four feet wide, these doors can be used to showcase the enormity of any location. Pivot Doors add a modern look to the exterior as well as embellishing the entryway at the same time. These doors help the front door to be wider and much more substantial in relation to the residential or commercial elevation.

JW9To the right, JELD-WEN Windows and Doors has raised the bar with its striking entry doors that are a sure-fire way to add value and immediate street-appeal to your home. They offer innovative improvements to its pioneering pivot door system for the hot new trend of taller, wider entry doors. The pivot door system introduced by Corinthian Doors, a member of the JELD-WEN Windows and Doors family, handles the weight of taller and wider entry doors that have become a dominant feature in modern design.

WWSPivotDrawing2

The pivot system means the weight of the door is carried at the top and bottom rather than on traditional hinged jambs. The system offers a self-closing mechanism that holds the door in a fully open position so that entering the home is unobtrusive and when released from the open position the door will automatically close shut.

JW6Corinthian’s popular Sunburst range is one of the most stunning of the entry door suite and has proved popular for those looking to maximize the value of their home by enhancing its immediate impact. With funky design elegance and strong lines reflecting the radiating power of the sun, the Sunburst double-door sets comes in bold, symmetrical designs: Sunburst Grand and Sunburst Arc. The creative range also comes in seven glazing options, each of which is enhanced using a new splayed glazing bead profile. Sunburst doors can be stained or painted. The innovative pivot door systems have become standard across the JELD-WEN Windows and Doors entry door range and have set new standards for entry doors across the residential building industry.

Series980To the right, Western Window Systems Series 980 Pivot Door is boldly dramatic and decidedly modern. As mentioned by Western Window Systems, the massive glass on the Series 980 Pivot Door maximizes views and lets in light. Custom hardware allows it to open with ease. Also, because it is aluminum, the Series 980 Pivot Door is low maintenance and is best suited for environments where screening is not necessary. With an array of finishes and sizes, this specific pivot door can fit almost any residential or commercial project.

From patio to entry to interior doors, Pivot Doors come in a multitude of finishes and such as aluminum, steel and wood, and an array of sizes so this door can fit the need of any project.

ABSi and AG Millworks Team up in Silicon Valley!

May20161When this family was in the process of designing their spacious new home, they wanted the best of both worlds for their doors and windows—sleek and modern function with warm, traditional details. Builder Gary Ernst of Ernst Development and Designer Steve Simpson of SDG Architecture teamed up with ABS Los Gatos Door and Window expert Loren Monge to help them make their dreams a reality. AG Millworks custom aluminum clad bi-fold patio doors and custom aluminum clad pocketing lift and slide doors were the perfect solution for their New England-inspired traditional home.

Bi-fold doors and windows fold open entire rooms to the outdoors in the playful pool/guesthouse living quarters and kitchen. In the great room of the main house, pocketing lift and slide doors disappear into the walls to create living space that flows out seamlessly onto the patio and pool areas. Two walls of the formal dining room fold away with AG Millworks bi-fold patio doors, transforming a cozy winter dining experience into an open air patio in just moments.

May20168

A new take on an old favorite—the pass-through kitchen window is achieved with bi-fold patio windows so every opening is accessible when the family entertains. Throughout the rest of the house, high end production windows and doors from Clad Outswing Bi-Fold Windows, Clad Bi-fold Doors, Clad Lift & Slide Doors, and Clad Lift & Slide Pocket Doors. All products were finished with a white clad exterior, primed interior, no screens, with satin nickel hardware and SB 60 Glass.

PRESS- DWM Magazine 2016. What to do When the Wall Just Won't Do?

WhatToDo1

In February, Associated Building Supply, Inc., was named one of DWM’s fastest-growing dealers, having seen sales revenue grow more than 40 percent each year for the past three years and that’s because ABSi knows big sliding doors! In 2014, ABSi was Western Window Systems largest volume specialty dealer in the US., Euroline Steel Windows & Doors’ top volume dealer in the US., and Jeld-WEN’s largest volume specialty dealer in California.

The beauty for the Window & Door Dealer is the ability to blend margins up by inserting specialty sliding doors systems into standard window and door packages. "A veteran sales rep is laser focused on earnings and uses this strategy as a tool to increase commissions and margin bonuses," says Scott Thurber, Vice President of Associated Building Supply, Inc. This high end sliding door product segment has not yet been commoditized in the marketplace primarily due to its installation and application complexities. To sell successfully with no call backs requires a higher sales skill set which includes rough opening layout, post job walks, and structural engineering. When a sales rep can flawlessly perform these value added services builders will happily pay more for the product.

PRESS - LBM Journal 2016. Associated Building Supply Builds on California Luxury

In markets like the California coastline regions of San Francisco and San Diego, where new home builds are priced well into the millions, it pays to be an expert in your product category. For Associated Building Supply, Inc., that specialty is windows and doors. And not just any doors and windows. At ABSi, they provide windows and doors to the builders of some of the most expensive homes in the country.

Led by longtime friends Scott Thurber and Chris Cole, Associated Building Supply, Inc. has a story that differs from many building materials dealers still climbing out of the recession. For ABSi, the focus on high-end windows and door products actually kept the business growing through the recession.

The two have known each other since they were both regional sales managers for a window company in the 1980s. Cole opened ABSi’s first location in 1993 in Oxnard, California. Since then, the company has grown to 13 locations, primarily high-end product showrooms specifically displaying unique window and door products. ABSi locations include a main office based at the Oxnard location and a satellite corporate office in Auburn, California. The remaining 11 locations are showrooms/sale offices in Burlingame, Berkeley, Sonoma, Dublin, Los Gatos, Pacific Grove, Oxnard, Calabasas, Costa Mesa, Torrance, and San Diego.

The high-end market has helped ABSi grow to a 2015 total sales revenue of $30.1 million, with a 2016 projection of more than $40 million. The fact of the matter is, while the economy struggled, those with more simply struggled less. “The affluent buyer will have resources even in bad times,” Thurber said. While higher-end products for higher-end homes have always been the company’s focus, Thurber said that product selection has never been mandated as so with the sales staff. “We’ve always been a wood clad seller,” he said, “so our non-commoditized custom offerings have always been a higher percentage of our sales.”

Thurber said ABSi sales staff, guided by the company’s product portfolio, have become specialists in the luxury home market. This has helped distinguish ABSi from its competitors in the market. Click HERE for the full article.

PRESS - DWM Magazine 2016. Housing Revs Up for Big Growth in 2016

Housing’s long, slow road back form the Great Recession has been full of fits and starts, but it appears to be finally hitting the accelerator. Most major forecasts released this fall see strong, steady growth for home construction into 2016 and beyond, bolstered by an improving economy. Though the housing market is currently at 53 percent of normal, by the end of 2016, single-family housing starts are forecast to hit more than 900,000 units, or about 74 percent of normal. That number could rise to more than 1 million units, or 91 percent of normal by 2017 especially as remodeling grew 6.8 percent in 2015 and is expected to grow 6.1 percent in 2016.

Scott Thurber, Vice President of Associated Building Supply Inc. says, “Housing prices continue to escalate on the San Francisco Peninsula and in the Bay Area from San Jose to San Rafael. We’re seeing the same in Southern California. The influx of foreign money, specifically China, into California is also driving demand in the housing market. We haven’t seen the real estate market this strong in the Bay Area and Southern California in years. The midrange segment is flourishing too, and seems to be enjoying the most significant appreciation. We’re watching sleepy beach town shift to destination resort areas, driving real estate prices and demand up. An example of this is Santa Cruz. Two years ago, a 900-square-foot, two-bedroom, one-bath, non-ocean-view home was selling for $550,000. Today, the same home is selling for $780,000. This is a byproduct of Santa Cruz upgrading their downtown, community facilities and attracting more high-end business.” Click HERE to read the full article.

PRESS - DWM Magazine 2016. ABSi Top Window and Door Dealer Nationally

THRIVING IN A COMPETITIVE MARKET

DWM magazine’s top door and window dealers sport some impressive stories behind numbers on both coasts and Associated Building Supply is a perfect example as it has tripled in size in just four years. Though competition was fierce, ABSi persevered allowing them to move from their No. 37 position in 2014 to the No. 23 spot now. The company moved up the list as it added two more locations in the past year and continues its growth. In fact, ABSi’s Vice President Scott Thurber says sales revenue has grown more than 40 percent each year for the last three years. “We have tripled in size in four years,” he says.

That growth will no doubt continue thanks to a new division formed in 2015: The Luxury Production Home Division (LPHD). “This division alone is forecasted to add an additional $5 million in revenue in 2016,” says Thurber. He describes this new venture as one that provides residential homebuilders and developers who build high-end production homes with the finest-quality door and window products in conjunction with unmatched value-added services.

“We are committed to consistently provide an exceptional value proposition that will earn the confidence and ultimately, the trust of our customers,” Thurber concludes.

Next Generation in Sliding Door Technology

2015PAMProject6Pacific Architectural Millwork is a premier millwork manufacturer with extensive experience fabricating and installing custom stile and rail doors, lift-and-slide doors, bi-fold doors, and windows for commercial and residential projects of all sizes and styles. Throughout 2015, Associated Building Supply, Inc., and PAM had partnered up for a few projects lead by ABSi sales consultant Bob Parliament as well Rich Mathieu. The projects feature, fixed windows, bi-fold, multi-slide as well as lift and slide doors featuring PAM's slide and seal technology.

Fixed Windows are an effective, inexpensive way of allowing natural light into those dull areas of the home, like the ends of hallways or stairwell landings. Added or coupled to your operable windows and doors, fixed windows will noticeably brighten up living areas and increase your vision area. Bi-fold doors also known as folding doors or accordion doors, along with multi-slide, and lift and slide doors, open up by folding inward at the middle or end. They are a usually found indoors and consist of multiple panels. These doors can provide a quick sight and sound division with a simple operation.

Exclusive to PAM, the patent-pending Slide & Seal represents a quantum leap in sliding door technology. The panels glide effortlessly along the track until they reach the closed position, which automatically triggers an independently-operating bottom threshold to drop and seal the doors, thus eliminating the need for bulky handles to operate and lower each panel.

The advantages of the Slide & Seal door system over traditional Lift & Slides are numerous: adjustability in the rollers to facilitate installation and accommodate variations in the opening, reduced cost and cleaner lines due to less visible hardware, flush handles and edge pulls that allow the panels to disappear flush into a pocket, and the ability to automate the door with remote or keypad operation while retaining weather performance.

The pictures displayed below are a prime example of great results provided through a great partnership. For many years, ABSi has teamed up with PAM for unique and stunning projects, both large and small as shown below.

ABSi Partnerships at the 2015 MDC

MDC

Over the weekend of Oct 16-18, 2015, Associated Building Supply, Inc., along with two of its premier vendors Pacific Architectural Millwork and Euroline Steel Windows & Doors participated in the 2015 Monterey Design Conference (MDC) located at the Asilomar in Pacific Grove, which is just a mile from ABSi’s Pacific Grove Showroom. Representing ABSi were sales consultants Tim Bradshaw and Connie Bradshaw, based out of the Pacific Grove Showroom. “It was a jam packed event and great exposure for ABSi,” said Bradshaw. For ABSi, it's a pleasure to support the AIA and its members whom we interact with frequently statewide. The booth was located at space #P11 in the Pavilion with brochures and sample products on hand. ABSi’s Vice President, Scott Thurber was elated as he believes, “Anytime ABSi can give back and support the AIA were all for it! The MDC was a great platform to present our name brand and Product Portfolio to high profile Architects statewide.”

Regional Account Manager, Rob Holland, represented Pacific Architectural Millwork at the MDC. “The atmosphere was very casual and very different than other architectural conferences/events that I have attended,” however “As always, I have a solid relationship with ABSi and their associates so that interaction and experience was great,” stated Holland. Representing Euroline Steel Windows & Doors was their National Sales Director, Brace Lake. Describing the atmosphere as, “festive and friendly.” Lake claims, “ABSi is a valued partner and it was a pleasure to meet architects from all regions of California.”

BraceABSi sponsored a one-hour CES course hosted by Holland and Lake. The course explained the design elements and benefits of large indoor/outdoor living spaces using quality manufacturers of fenestration products.  “It was a positive experience," specified Lake as both he and Holland were able to meet with esteemed architects, as well as other distinguished members of the industry.

Entering its fourth decade, the Monterey Design Conference (MDC) brings together the world’s leading architects and design thinkers for an intellectually vibrant weekend. According to Bradshaw, “Having a partnership at MDC with Euroline and PAM further increased our visibility, architectural confidence and gave us a unique opportunity to collaborate on the spot with architects looking for solutions for their projects both present and future.” With over 800 architects in attendance, this was an elite event to be able to engage with the architectural community at a distinct location, and Thurber concluded, “I believe its these type of events that move the ball forward for ABSi and put our name brand on the map as a resource for Architects.”

U.S. Department of Energy

solar elevationFor its first U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, the University of California, Davis, is creating the M-Power house—a marketable, sustainable house that contributes to the well-being and dignity of migrant farm laborers. The house will demonstrate cutting-edge "smart home" technology to synchronize its demands with the needs of the electrical grid and communicate with both the resident and power provider to manage energy systems effectively. The design of the M-Power dwelling combines public and private spaces in three linear zones. Two climate-controlled living spaces are separated by an unconditioned, enclosed deck. These three zones act as climate buffers that maximize passive cooling in summer and passive heating in winter. The units act as a system of active and passive techniques of energy efficiency. Solar decathalon Sponsorship EventThe house's passive components allow maximum user adjustability, while active components adjust energy to residents' needs and learn from their daily rhythms. The M-Power house will be a modular, reusable building constructed of prefabricated components and locally available materials.

The Solar Decathlon is an international award-winning program that challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.— U.S. Department of Energy

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Decathlon is a prestigious competition meant to encourage responsible energy use and research into sustainable design utilizing solar power.
The first Solar Decathlon was held in 2002 and has continued biennially since 2005. UC Davis was invited to participate in the 7th iteration of the Solar Decathlon competition in 2015.
